Evolving workforce: Mobile Device Management

July 3, 2013

Not so very long ago, mobile device management was an afterthought, and Information Technology departments were only having to manage PCs within a secure, well-understood corporate platform. But with the explosion of smart computing devices, mostly smartphones, and tablets, everything has changed.

Compared to desktops, mobile devices have shown strong growth in the market all over the world, which has made today's workforce more mobile than ever. The concept of BYOD has raised challenges in organizations in terms of data security, application handling, and also network security.

It's not surprising that the mobile workforce wants anytime, anywhere access to workplace technologies. What is surprising is the fact that according to a new study, an overwhelming majority say their job satisfaction and productivity are now tied to this level of access. That means companies whose IT managers confront the challenges involved in allowing employees to connect via an array of devices can help their employers see sizeable gains.

What's necessary is for IT managers to address employees' real needs and actual behaviors with policies that are accommodating enough to discourage workers from skirting restrictions and creating security holes.

The reality is that rapid advances in technology also require a new breed of 'nimble' IT managers, who proactively integrate developments into an organization rather than delay and block the transition.

In many ways, mobile device management is in chaos right now as this market keeps rapidly evolving and requires a continuous update in which this is managed within organizations. Already Information Technology managers are moving away from simply managing devices and towards more complicated control of apps and data.

The big takeaway is that everything is changing, and the demand for skilled Information Technology specialists is becoming more important for the day-to-day operations of any size company.
