Goal setting for a rewarding career

August 20, 2012

Believe it or not many people neglect professional career goal setting. Most do have career goals at the beginning of their careers, but after some time you get comfortable in your job and have a routine, so you just forget about it. Defining your career goals will help you make necessary steps toward a satisfying work life. Research has shown that people perform best when they set tough and precise goals for themselves. So where do you start?

Time Out
The hardest part is to take the time to sit down and actually think about what you want to achieve. Time is so precious that we often argue we have better things to do than take time out to define and
set our career goals. However, this is exactly where we are wrong. You have to clear your desk for half an hour to really think about what it is you want to achieve in your career. Therefore, the first step is to book a time-out in your diary for goal setting, and to keep the appointment!

Be specific
Like all things, it's important to be very specific about what you want to achieve in your career. Start with short-term goals and set yourself a specific deadline when you want to achieve this. Then slowly map out a plan for the next 5 years. The odds are that things will change as you are presented with different opportunities but that's why it's important to regularly take
stock of your career and adapt your goals constantly.

Be realistic
We all would like to be the CEO of a big company, have a corner office, and spent most of our lives on exotic islands clinching 'business deals'. But, this kind of thinking is not going to get you anywhere. You have to be honest with yourself in terms of what a realistic expectation is and how your career weighs up in terms of priority in relation to the rest of your life.

So start today, take some time to get your career back on track.
