Interviewing and hiring is never simple. Lack of time and attention to the hiring process is the root cause of poor hiring decisions and employees who wash out early on. Building a great team is essential to having a great business.
There are many costs associated with turnover, including the time and energy it takes to hire, possible reputation damage if an employee deals with customers, and the burden of having to repeat the process. You want to get it right the first time.
We’ve got some experience in screening candidates and matching them to your company to fit with the culture and strengthen your teams. Here are some tips to help you with hiring new staff:
Anticipating Changes
One of the key things that need to happen on a regular basis is trying to identify any members of your team who might be at risk of leaving for any reason. This helps you identify early on the possible skills and gaps you might experience in your team and you can pro-actively plan for those changes and potential hires that will need to take place.
Verify results
Don't assume that a candidate will replicate the results they had at another company with you. During the interview process it’s essential that you probe into the reasons for their success: the number of branches covered, referrals received, inherited clients, market conditions, sales support, the technology platform, marketing programs and other variables that may not be as prevalent at your institution. This part of the screening process is key to establishing if candidates are the correct fit for your team.
Consider personality vs job function
Personality traits are difficult to demonstrate on a CV, so it's important to really explore this during the interview process. You want to hire only candidates whose beliefs and behavior systems appear congruent with your organizational culture. The candidate must exhibit both the necessary qualifications to perform the job and the essential fit needed to work effectively within the existing organization. However, there is a difference between working effectively within your organization and an individual with the same thinking. At the end of the day, you want to hire employees that will bring freshness and diversity to the conversation and the thinking while still being able to connect with the core values of the organization.
Get team input
The more people on the team who buy into the selection of a particular candidate, the better chance that the staff will have a vested interest in helping the new person be successful. Individuals with intimate knowledge of the job are often better equipped to evaluate how candidates will actually fare in the position. Having more people involved in the interview process gives you a broader perspective and more insight into the candidate. Inevitably some of your team members might see things in people you don’t, and likewise, many times they confirm the positive/negative qualities you’ve observed.
