Unconventional career advice

Let's be honest, there's no shortage of career advice or advice about anything on the internet. You might even argue that you are awfully bombarded and you need a break from taking advice on the internet. But you're reading this so maybe this article will help. Have you ever looked back in your life and thought to yourself: why did I waste so much time worrying? Did I make the wrong career move? Why is my career not peeking? Why did I push myself? Well, maybe it's because you were young and did not know any better or no one ever really told you. So here's advice that will make you feel better about your life and career choices as a young person.

You are not your job!
There is no arguing that we have placed great emphasis on defining ourselves through our work. This is known as '
work-role-centrality' meaning your job is central to who you are. But truth is, you are more than your job, and defining yourself with your role overlooks many parts of your identity. This is not to say your job is not important – it is. That's why you've worked so hard to get it and are working even harder to keep it but in the words of Chuck Palahniuk: 'you are not your job, you are not how much money you have in the bank, you are not the car you drive, you are not the contents of your wallet.' Realize you are more!

There is no right time. Just do it!
There is never going to be a right time or right moment to speak, share an idea, or take a chance on something. If you feel strongly about it gather your courage and just do it. This may sound easier said than done but take a chance on life. Be daring! Say yes to that promotion, only the hiring manager can say no.

Ask stupid questions
It is often said that we must not take life too seriously, well, the same can be said about our careers. Do not take it too seriously. Understand that the growth of your career will not be linear, so do not be afraid to ask even the silliest of questions. Seek knowledge, be inquisitive. You will thank yourself once you have that gratifying answer!

Know when it is not for you and that's okay too.
While you work your way up in your career do not be afraid to do different things. This will allow you to find out what you like and do not like. As you switch jobs and tasks in-between you may discover that maybe you don't like numbers as much as you thought and prefer helping people or being in the field instead of the office for 8 hours. This discovery will help shape your career into something more meaningful to you and your overall life.
