Why you should revise your career plan

June 30, 2017

The days of advancing in your career relying on being religiously promoted from your current post to another based on age and longevity are dead and gone! The success and growth of your career have to be planned thoroughly, it will not happen by accident. You will have to work hard, have talent, do a lot of learning, employ careful management and nope, it won't be easy!

If you want to grow in your current career or generally feel stagnant in your current role here are a few things you should take into consideration.

Revisit your plan
Deciding to pursue a
career path is full of challenges and potential for failure. If you see that your career is not taking shape and you have done your bests to resurrect it, don't continue to pursue it hopelessly. Revise or change it altogether. You might find out that your skills are outdated or you purely need new ones or better yet, your industry is dying so it is time to diversify.

Take the revision as an opportunity to learn, improve, and make better choices. The last thing you want is an unfulfilled career. Also bear in mind that this review is not final, you will still have to review it to see if you are on track or if you have to make adjustments so it's an ongoing process that will help curb your career downfall.

Understand your personal qualities
It's important to believe in yourself, your skills, your ability to succeed, and know that it's never too late to steer your career in the right direction. One way of doing this is by assessing your personal qualities.

Understanding what you can and cannot do. Match your skills to your interest and abilities. Based on where you are steering your career; find out what new attributes you will need to acquire to thrive. You are never too old to learn!

Tough love
As an adult, your life can be stressful and the thought of a
career change can be daunting, but it is a decision that has to be made and you can only do it if you are true to yourself. One way of doing this is by asking yourself the following questions.

  • What areas of yourself will you need to develop?
  • Is there a course you need to do?
  • What actions do you need to take to realize your career goals?
  • Are there contacts you can make or relationships you can develop, that might help you?

After this, you should have a clearer understanding of which direction you want to take; grow in your current role, or steer your career in a completely different direction. Whatever you decide the end goal of your career will guide you.
