Have you noticed any signs of fatigue, grumpiness, stress, or a strange wild-eyed look in the eyes of any of your staff? The holidays are fast approaching and with them the end of the year for many companies. With time running short for year-end deadlines the stress and drive are affecting many people and the fuses are a bit shorter than normal. However, there are ways to keep everyone motivated while getting all to work done collaboratively.
Make your employees feel valued
Knowing that people are tired and feeling stressed it's important to communicate to staff the value of the work they are doing. Thank them, give them praise, recognize them for their contribution to the business, encourage them to feel that their work makes a difference to the business, and give feedback constructively.
Review past goals
Sometimes it's important to just take a moment and review how much has already been accomplished during the year. Once employees are aware the biggest part of the work has been done, it becomes much easier to walk that last mile.
Curb the negativity
The reality is when we are tired we tend to only start focusing on the negative. Especially towards the end of the year, it's important to resist the negativity that seems to creep into your workday. Everybody is tired and has got a lot to do but the key here is to not spend hours discussing this but rather just to focus on the task at hand and get things done.
Remember.. it won't last forever
Although stress levels are high and the pressure is intense to still meet the necessary deadlines, just remember it won't last forever. So, as long as everyone remembers to keep breathing and as a manager, you take on the role of administering donuts and coffee as required your team should survive the 'end of year fatigue syndrome' for another year.
So, let's finish the rest of the year with a bang. Surround yourself with motivated and driven peers.
