One goal at a time

November 4, 2012

As the year runs down what was the biggest thing you have accomplished for yourself? When I say big, I don't necessarily mean making a million rand or buying the most expensive car. I mean setting up personal goals that you achieved or at least came close to it.

Why Set Goals?
Goal setting is used by athletes, successful business-people, and achievers in all fields. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It focuses on your achievement of knowledge and helps you to organize your time and your possessions so that you can make the very most of your life.

By setting sharp, clear distinct goals, you can measure and take delight in the accomplishments and you'll see progress in what might previously have seemed a long and pointless road. You will also boost your self-confidence, as you recognize your own ability in achieving the goals that you have set.

The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to accomplish in your lifetime. This will give you a perspective of where you want to be in your personal life or career.

To give you more of a broad view, write down all the important areas in your life where you want to grow. Here are a few examples:

Career
Are you happy with your current job? Do you want something challenging or are you in a comfort zone? These are the question you should ask yourself because you need to know what level you want to be in your career or what you want to achieve.

Education
Is there any particular knowledge you want to gain? Find out what information and skills you will need to bring you a step closer to attaining your aspirations.

Attitude
Your attitude determines your altitude. Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem.

Spend some time brainstorming your goals and then select one or more goals in each category that best reflect what you want to accomplish. Then start working on things that will draw you closer to achieving your goals and finally reaching them!
